Lucian și Marius, la Web Summit Lisabona

Între 6 și 9 noiembrie 2017, colegii noștri Lucian Urcan, senior project manager, și Marius Pantea, teamleader iOS, au participat la cea mai mare conferință pe zona tehnologică din lume, desfășurată în Portugalia, la Lisabona.

Web Summit a reunit 60.000 de participanți și a avut peste 1.000 de speakeri. Au fost susținute 20 de conferințe desfășurate în paralel, în patru pavilioane imense și o arenă de concerte care includea scena principală.

  • AI is the future of the human race.

  • The pace of change, in AI, is accelerating.
  • What if, instead of destroying our enemies we destroy the concept of enemies.
  • The human data privacy is a human right.

  • Then success in any market comes from having the best product.
  • The challenge is to develop the right tools and give everyone a fair chance to make it in the market.
  • When you grow, you shouldn’t deny anyone’s right to challenge you.
  • The competition is driving innovation.
  • The paradox of the free market is that you have to interfere, to put democracy ahead of the jungle’s law.
  • The society is primarily about people, not about technology. So the people have to take their democracy back.

The challenges and opportunities facing the world, speaker Antonio Guterres (United Nations)

  • Climate change is the defining threat of our times.
  • We have to be careful with the side effects of innovation.
  • We need to make sure that innovation is a force for good.

  • The #1 cause of death for young adults in US is the drug abuse.
  • Everyone thinks they have the best idea in healthcare.
  • People change based on what they feel, not based on what they know.
  • The smartphone can be the greatest healing device we have.
  • You can use voice analysis for detecting the stress level of the user.

How to prevent a cyberwar, speaker Jared Cohen (Google Jigsaw)

  • By 2020 we will have more smart devices than humans.
  • The revolutions are now easier to start, but a lot harder to finish.
  • Every country will have two policies – one for the physical world and one for the digital world.
  • All the future wars will begin as cyberwars.
  • Cyberwar tactics :
    • Fake news
    • Patriotic trolling
    • Digital paramilitaries (fake accounts of the people you interact to). They will

  • When you interact with other agents, you have to adapt.
  • Stopping competition means stopping innovation.
  • It shouldn’t be the size or the connections that decide if a company is successful or not.
  • No company is above the law.

Life 3.0, speakers Max Tegmark (Future of Life Institute), Andy O’Donoghue (IMOS-TodayFM)

  • AI is not a sensitive subject for politicians – and it should be.
  • When we won’t be the smarter entity in the world anymore, we will lose control.
  • Fake news will become worst, and fake videos (CGI-based) are starting to appear.

Machine learning / security, speaker Garry Kasparov

  • AI changes the game in IT security.
  • Whomever has the richest set of data (and can label them) wins.
  • Security today is all about BigData.
  • AI is also used to complicate the malicious attacks as well.
  • The biggest issue : the tradeoff between security and privacy.

The past / present / future of graphs – connected data, speaker Emil Eifrem (Neo4j)

  • The investigative journalism is all about finding patterns.
  • More than 13.4 mil documents (1,4 Tb data) in Paradise Papers, 2 german journalists
  • Finding patterns requires maintaining a lessons learned database.
  • Attach your data to the rest of the world’s => get context => get actionable insights.
  • ML is based on graphs.
  • Context drives meaning / precision to ML systems.
  • They build Neo4j database – graph platform
  • Because of Neo4j takes 2 years less to arrive on Mars

Striking the balance between big data and online privacy, speakers David Gorodyansky (AnchorFree), Jane Zavalishina (Yandex Data Factory), Alex Konrad (Forbes)

  • People usually don’t care (still) about their privacy, online.
  • People mostly want a switch for privacy, to switch it on and off.
  • Trend for the future : privacy as a service.

The role of instinct in data analysis, speaker Christian Beedgen (Sumo Logic)

  • People over 45yo usually “die” in terms of new ideas.
  • In God we trust, all others must bring data 🙂

  • Voice is now the new standard (voice search traffic increases)
  • The Amazon Alexa skills kit is open for everyone.
  • Voice interfaces will be the next major disruption in computing.
  • All systems should/must have a “human interface”
  • Amazon Polly – Text to Speech in 47 Voices and 24 Languages – Duolinguo is built using Amazon Polly

What does it look like to compute the entire planet?, speaker Kalev Leetaru (Google)

  • Human society as a whole is a living, breathing creature.”
  • GDELT Project (gdeltproject.org) – The goal of GDELT is to take data and apply algorithms to try and understand the world.
  • GDELT uses GCP (Google Cloud Platform)

IPO’s & the future of games, speakers Kati Levoranta (Rovio Entertainment), Rob Pegoraro (Yahoo Finance/USA Today)

  • There are more than 20 games launched, only 3 different from Angry Birds universe
  • AR or VR game -> when the market will be ready
  • They will launch an IPS

Google in Europe

  • The products and services should always work in the user’s best interest, not against it.
  • The companies need a simplification of the tax rules.
